A Gift for Gardeners Awaits

At Carroll Community College

Looking for a gift for the gardener in your life? Or, want to treat yourself? Enroll in “The Importance of Being Native: How to Design a Native Garden,” a one-night, three-hour course at Carroll Community College.

The class will be held Thurs., March 28, from 6:30 to 9:30 in Carroll Community College’s P-1st Financial Credit Union Life Fitness Center.

First, we will discuss what your gardens are like and what you hope to achieve in the class.

Then, we will explore how to design a beautiful garden for you and the pollinators that live there. We will discuss plants native to the Piedmont region. Which plants support the most wildlife, which are the classics? Are there some unusual plants that you may not have considered?

Get new ideas about how to combine ground covers, perennials, sedges, grasses, ferns, shrubs, and trees to create a garden that attracts pollinators and other wildlife and may even lessen your work load.

You will learn which plants bloom from spring to fall and what conditions they need to succeed. Join the leave the leaves movement and save the pollinators. Learn about local nurseries that sell native plants in your area.

Gardeners of all backgrounds are welcome. If you like, bring a sketch of the garden you would like to design, redesign or have questions about. Photos of your garden are also welcome.

The class will be taught by Laura O’Callaghan. A Master Gardener since 2014, she is a Finksburg resident and native plant enthusiast. She started the website, IntheGardenwithLaura.com, in 2016. Laura was a founding member of the Finksburg Library Gardens. She teaches at Howard Community College, lectures at local libraries and covers the Philadelphia Flower Show every March.

The total cost of the class is $49. Registration ends at 12:00 am, Thursday, March 28, 2024, the day of the class.
